Biography:

Dr. Anna K. Allen joined IOS in September 2021 as a program director for the Developmental Systems Cluster (DSC). Her time at NSF includes the involvement in agency wide programs, such as the Excellence in Research program.

Prior to her appointment at NSF, Dr. Allen held a position as a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Howard University in Washington, DC. Her training is in developmental biology and molecular genetics, and she holds a doctoral degree in Biology from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Allen’s research while in academia focused on understanding the mechanisms by which a high-quality gamete (egg or sperm) is generated using the genetically tractable model system C. elegans. Dr. Allen has engaged high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in inquiry-based research. She has also participated in nationwide programs to integrate active learning into the undergraduate curriculum through Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs).
