Biography
Kim Silverman is the Special Assistant to the Director for Strategic Engagements and Events and serves on the policy and strategy team in the Office of the Director (OD) of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), a $9.06B federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. She leads development of domestic and international engagement activities and organizes and directs the work of a team for the agency Director and Chief Science Officer. As a member of the OD policy and strategy team, she collaborates to strategize on agency-wide initiatives.
Silverman previously served as a Special Assistant to NSF’s Chief of Research Security Strategy and Policy (CRSSP), working on high-level research security policies and initiatives. She led product development efforts including, mandatory research security training for staff; assisted the CRSSP in the review and analysis of information critical to U.S. national security; and supported the CRSSP at sensitive meetings with other federal agencies and groups in the research and intelligence communities.
Prior to joining the OD in 2019, Silverman was a Science Policy Analyst in the National Science Board Office at NSF where she provided strategic oversite and worked on science and engineering policies and communications strategies. Preceding this position, Silverman was in NSF’s Office of Polar Programs, where she served dual roles—as the Polar Information Officer, directing media-related projects and activities and managing the Antarctic Sun newspaper. She was also the Program Director of the Antarctic Artists and Writers program; to increase public understanding and interest in Antarctic research and the region.
Silverman joined NSF in 2001 after working in the private sector as Marketing Manager at CommWorks Corporation’s (3Com subsidiary) Operations Support System division.
